  3. A main sequence star in the H-R diagram, for example, our own Sun. Dwarfs are in the luminosity class V.
  4. Stars below dwarfs are divided into red dwarfs, subdwarfs, and white dwarfs. Above are giants.

  6. Luminosity class describes the absolute brightness, or magnitude, of a star. The classes are marked with Roman 
  7. numerals I - VII.

  9. Luminosity classes:
  10. I includes supergiants
  11. II includes bright giants
  12. III includes giants
  13. IV includes subgiants
  14. V includes main sequence stars (dwarfs)
  15. VI includes subdwarfs
  16. VII includes white dwarfs

  18. When stars are classified by their properties, the spectral class is given first, followed by the luminosity class. This is 
  19. called the Yerkes classification.
  20.
